Sortera Supports Local School with RideSmart Initiative
Empowering Young Cyclists with Essential Road Safety Skills
Sortera’s RideSmart initiative provided Ferry Lane Primary students with essential cycling skills, boosting confidence and road safety awareness. This effort aligns with Sortera’s commitment to community engagement and safer roads.
At Sortera, we are committed to making a positive impact in the communities where we live and work. As London’s largest specialist construction waste management company, we recognise the importance of engaging with our local community and promoting road safety.
As part of our ongoing dedication to these values, earlier this week we were delighted to organise and fund a three-day cycling proficiency course for students at local school Ferry Lane Primary. Sortera’s RideSmart initiative focused on helping children develop essential skills, improving their ability to ride, manoeuvre, and control their bikes with confidence. Pupils from Years 4, 5, and 6 took part in a series of exercises, games and hands on training, designed to enhance their balance, coordination, and overall technique in a safe and controlled environment. These skills are crucial for ensuring that young cyclists can navigate roads responsibly.
Lisa Rawashdeh, Headteacher at Ferry Lane Primary School said, “Children are some of our most vulnerable road users… So, it’s a really valuable opportunity for us to prepare our youngsters. It’s important that we are working in tandem with a local organisation such as Sortera, to help us deliver it.”
This initiative aligns with Sortera’s commitment to supporting the development of the local community while also reinforcing the importance of road safety. By providing opportunities for young cyclists to improve their riding ability, we are equipping them with practical skills that will benefit them moving forward. While this course focused on fundamental cycling proficiency, it also complements Sortera’s wider work in road safety, such as our collaboration with the Metropolitan Police on the ‘Exchanging Places’ initiative, which raises awareness of HGV blind spots and promotes safer interactions between cyclists and HGV drivers.
Sortera remains dedicated to investing in initiatives that promote road safety and benefit the communities we serve. Through projects like this, we continue to strengthen our connection with the local area and make a lasting, positive impact.
